Advanced Learning Eligibility Process Update

Where are we in the Advanced Learning Eligibility Process?

Grades 1-8

  • Final Assessment for HC and AL eligibility is nearing completion  
  • Wednesday, Feb 15: School folder is updated with eligibility decisions   
  • Thursday, March 2: Families receive eligibility letters by e-mail   
  • Thursday, March 16 – Appeals due   
  • Conditional Appeals: A condition or circumstance believed to have caused inaccurate testing results. The appealing party must collect and submit in writing:  
    • An explanation detailing why they believe the Final Assessment results are inaccurate due to a condition or circumstance and compelling reasoning for why an exception should be made.  
  • Identification Appeals: There was a mistake in the data used for the Final Assessment which caused the student to be found ineligible for services. To initiate an identification appeal, the appealing party must collect and submit in writing:  
    • An explanation accompanied by evidence proving there was a mistake in the data used for the Final Assessment.

Kindergarten  

  • Universal screening began Monday, Feb 13
  • Criteria is available on the SPS Advanced Learning webpage
  • Tuesday, Feb. 21: School Folders updated with Universal Screening results
  • Tuesday, Feb. 28: Families receive notification/request for permission for Final Assessment

Advanced Learning Universal Screening Information

The Universal Screening occurred in December 2022 (grades 1-8) and will occur in February 2023 (Kindergarten).

Universal Screening data by grade level:

  • Winter 2023 Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) for reading and/or math at the 88-99 percentile; and/or  
  • DIBELS to illustrate reading at 75-99 percentile: and/or  
  • Demonstrated Performance Tool (DPT) completed by teaching staff showing a student’s ability to work above grade level in reading and/or math OR Gradebook T1 2023.
  • WA Kids data for reading and math above expected readiness level for Kindergarten. (Level pink or silver)

Advanced Learning also considers:   

  • Ability to gain language proficiency faster than standard acquisition using WIDA screener results (English Language Learner students).  
  • Academic assessment data evaluated during the special education process resulting in eligibility for Special Education services.  
  • Students with two or more academic assessments in both Reading and Math with 95%-99% percentile without Demonstrated Performance or Gradebook.
  • Fall 2022 and Historical Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) growth – reading and/or math at the 88-99 percentile; and/or 
  • DIBELS – reading at the 75-99 percentile; and/or
  • Demonstrated Performance Tool (DPT) completed by teaching staff showing ability to work above grade level and reading and/or math OR Gradebook Spring 2022

Advanced Learning also considers:   

  • Ability to gain language proficiency faster than standard acquisition using WIDA screener results (English Language Learner students).  
  • Academic assessment data evaluated during the special education process resulting in eligibility for Special Education services.  
  • Students with three or more academic assessments in both Reading and Math with 95%-99% percentile without Demonstrated Performance or Gradebook. 
  • Fall 2022 and Historical Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) growth – reading and/or math at the 88-99 percentile; and/or 
  • Historical (2021-22 school year) DIBELS to illustrate reading at 75-99 percentile; and/or  
  • Demonstrated Performance Tool (DPT) completed by teaching staff showing ability to work above grade level and reading and/or math OR Gradebook Spring 2022

Advanced Learning also considers:   

  • Ability to gain language proficiency faster than standard acquisition using WIDA screener results (English Language Learner students).  
  • Academic assessment data evaluated during the special education process resulting in eligibility for Special Education services.  
  • Students with three or more academic assessments in both Reading and Math with 95%-99% percentile without Demonstrated Performance or Gradebook. 
  • 2022 spring Smarter Balance Assessments (SBA) – English and/or math at the 88-99 percentile; and/or 
  • Demonstrated Performance Tool (DPT) completed by teaching staff showing ability to work above grade level and reading and/or math OR Gradebook Spring 2022

Advanced Learning also considers:   

  • Ability to gain language proficiency faster than standard acquisition using WIDA screener results (English Language Learner students).  
  • Academic assessment data evaluated during the special education process resulting in eligibility for Special Education services.  
  • Students with three or more academic assessments in both Reading and Math with 95%-99% percentile without Demonstrated Performance or Gradebook.

Students in eighth grade are only considered for Highly Capable services. Advanced Learning is not offered in high school.

  • Spring 2022 Smarter Balance Assessments (SBA)– English and/or math at the 95-99 percentile; and/or 
  • Demonstrated Performance Tool (DPT) completed by teaching staff showing ability to work above grade level and reading and/or math OR Gradebook Spring 2022

Advanced Learning also considers:   

  • Ability to gain language proficiency faster than standard acquisition using WIDA screener results (English Language Learner students).  
  • Academic assessment data evaluated during the special education process resulting in eligibility for Special Education services.  
  • Students with three or more academic assessments in both Reading and Math with 95-99 percentile without Demonstrated Performance or Gradebook. 

If Universal Screening results indicate your student has the potential to be eligible for Advanced Learning or Highly Capable services, you will receive an informational letter and a parent/guardian permission to assess form.
