    After School Club Information

    Dear Cascadia Families,

With all of the transitions for the upcoming school year, we are hoping to ease some anxieties by releasing the before and after school club schedule for the fall. Please keep in mind that this is not final as we have not confirmed with all vendors, but this is what we are working toward.

The biggest change for the after-school clubs is that the pick-up time each day will be 4:00pm. Classes will be 1.5 hours long on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 2.75 hours long on Wednesdays. We understand the 4:00pm pick-up time might still be challenging for some families; however, the survey results showed that a two-tier club system for each day would not work.

Our hope in getting this schedule out early to families is that there is time to plan for the earlier pick up time. We will also be working over the summer to get descriptions of specific clubs and prices to you as soon as possible. Please be aware that prices for clubs will be more expensive due to the extended time.

Club registration will open the first full week of school and the after school clubs will start in early October.

We also wanted to say thank you to all families who responded to our club survey. It was helpful to get feedback and gauge where families are in terms of needs and the types of clubs that can potentially be offered. We are always looking for new types of classes and once we get settled into the new building, we will have a better idea of what spaces are available to us and will look into bringing in some different types of classes.

There was also a large request for organizing offsite classes. While there were some great suggestions, this is something that the PTA and Kids Co. cannot take on for liability reasons.

Lastly, we understand that the biggest frustration for some families is the registration process; specifically, the lack of online registration. An online registration system is something we are working toward as an organization, and we are exploring ways to make the registration process better for families as we move in this direction. We appreciate your patience and feedback on this.

We are looking forward to seeing all returning and new families in the new building this fall! Enjoy the rest of your summer!

    Welcome to Principal Birinyi

    Dear Cascadia community,

I am pleased to announce that Anna Birinyi has been selected as the new principal of Cascadia Elementary School. Anna Birinyi was one of multiple candidates interviewed by a hiring team that included Cascadia staff, parents and community members, school leaders, and central office staff, before being recommended for the consideration of the Superintendent and Chief of Schools. During her interview, the hiring committee recognized Ms. Birinyi for her extensive experience with the school, staff, and students; her critical understanding of students who are identified as “twice exceptional”; her student-centered voice; and her collaborative leadership.

Ms. Birinyi has most recently served as the Assistant Principal at Gatewood and Lafayette Elementary schools, where she engaged with teaching staff as a member of the Equity team working to eliminate opportunity gaps for students; worked closely with the school communities to address truancy; and participated in data-driven learning decisions to inform instructional plans. Her prior experience also includes time as the House Administrator at Cascadia and as a first and fifth grade teacher at the APP (now HCC) at Lincoln program.

Throughout her teaching and administrator career, Ms. Birinyi has had a passion for teaching writing and science and incorporating the arts into the classroom, while striving to create an inclusive environment where all students feel welcomed. Ms. Birinyi holds her Principal Certification from Seattle Pacific University, her Master of Arts in Teaching from the Teachers College, Columbia University, and her bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University. She is also a Seattle Public Schools alum, having attended Coe and John Muir Elementary schools, Washington Middle School, and graduated as a proud Bulldog from Garfield High School.

Ms. Birinyi’s position will become effective on July 1, 2017; however, she will begin working with interim Cascadia principal Kathy Jolly and Decatur principal Rina Geoghagan this spring to ensure a smooth transition to the new school building. She is excited to work together with the community to build an emotionally supportive environment where each Cascadia student continues to grow and become independent thinkers.

Thank you to Kathy Jolly for her leadership as interim principal. Please join me in welcoming Principal Anna Birinyi to Cascadia Elementary.

    Sincerely,

    Larry Dr. Larry Nyland, Principal

May 30th Letter from Principal Birinyi

    Hello Cascadia Families for 2017-18!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

I understand there were quite a few parents who did not receive my message last Thursday. As we make the transition to our new building and new team we need to send messages about next year to the "next year" list. Unfortunately, at this time the system only let's us pull one email address per student, listed as the "initial contact." Over the summer once the computer system transitions to the current year we will be able to send messages to both parents. In the mean time, if you are the initial contact please forward to others in your family.

I will also be working with the PTA to put any communications up on Facebook and out through the PTA. During the summer, PTA announcements and updates will be available on the school website: cascadiaes.seattleschools.org. Thanks for your understanding and patience as we make the transition!

I was able to tour the school on Friday and the building is beautiful! The building is filled with light coming in the many thoughtfully placed windows. The courtyards and outdoor spaces will be wonderful spots to engage in learning and the classroom spaces are warm and inviting.

Our building is mostly finished, just some final touches that need to happen. The playground is still in process and the fields aren't slated to go in until over the summer. But, we will have a wonderful space to move into come September!

The PTA is looking for a volunteer or pair of volunteers to coordinate the school garden transition to the new Cascadia site. Current volunteers have been working with the district and have identified a site for the new garden space. Our current garden educator, Rowan, plans to continue to provide garden education in conjunction with the third grade staff. We need someone(s) who can liaise between the PTA, the third grade staff, and the garden educator to help the garden education program take root at the new site. Additionally the coordinator(s) will need to organize work parties to get existing garden infrastructure moved to the new site and any new infrastructure built. Based on past experience, we anticipate a high turnout for families for work parties – we just need someone who can organize them! All of our third graders receive garden education thanks to a grant from the PTA. To ensure that future cohorts of third graders are able to receive garden education, we need your involvement now! Please contact KimberlyChristensen@live.com if you are interested in becoming our new parent-garden coordinator.

    Thank you!
