    The First 3 Weeks 

    Hi Families,

    What a whirlwind first 3 weeks. At this point I have now had the opportunity to spend 4 days of PE with each of your students. We spent our first week together going over procedures and expectations, discussing sportsmanship and giving grace to ourselves and others in learning new skills. We also played and went over rules for our favorite recess games here at Cascadia including 4 square, kickball, bump, hopscotch and SPUD. I began my journey to learn all your students’ names and a bit about each one! I hope to know everyone’s name by Halloween.

    These next 3 weeks we will be moving on to our 2nd unit.

    For 3rd-5th graders this is our week of baseline Fitness Measurements. We will measure our starting point and make goals for improvement this year. We measure our cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility doing push ups, curl ups, PACER (a progressive run test) and sit and reach. This can bring on some anxiety in kids, so it’s a good conversation to start at home and find out how your child feels about it. On the other hand, some kids really enjoy it and look forward to besting their previous measurements.

    For 1st and 2nd graders this week is all about personal space, pathways and locomotor skills as well as the introduction to the rock wall. Many kids have shared they are excited about climbing the wall, so be sure to ask your child how they enjoyed it following their week in PE.

    I do have one small reminder for PE moving forward. Please try to encourage your student to wear tennis shoes the week they have PE (they can also bring a pair to store in their classroom cubby). This helps us keep our gym floor in good condition as well as support and protect their feet/ankles while they move.
